2020 Syrah, Richards Vineyard 1.5L

The Richards Vineyard is a very small parcel, only 2.2 acres in size, that is situated within a geological bowl. It is heavily influenced by two mountain ranges, the Mayacamas to the east and the Annadel Ridge to the west. These mountain ranges essentially truncate day length, causing a later sunrise and earlier sunset, which extends the growing season and results in dark, hedonistic Syrah.

The 2020 growing season was warm and dry, resulting in a very small yield of only 7 barrels of wine. However, this produced an exceptionally complex wine, with aromas of cranberry preserves, olive tapenade, and fig paste. The wine also exhibits waves of sage, rosemary, and thyme, essentially creating a bouquet garni in your glass, which is a classic characteristic of this vineyard.

The palate has polished tannins that are mouthcoating and present, but weave effortlessly with the weight and freshness of the wine. The age-worthiness of this wine will likely not be measured in years, but rather in decades, and in its youth, decanting is recommended.
